UV (Ultra Violet) filters installed on your HVAC system can instantly kill mold, viruses, dust mites, and other airborne bacteria that may be accumulating on your system. Preventing the growth of harmful mold and other bacteria can make a positive impact on your family’s health and wellbeing. A UV light installation will disinfect the air by the air in the HVAC system passing over the UV bulb. If the airborne organisms are exposed to the UV light repetitively, there is a higher probability that the UV light will work effectively in eliminating bacteria and mold growth. After air passes through the furnace filter, it will pass over the UV light to kill any microorganisms that make it through the filter. This type of added protection against unwanted viruses and allergens allows has been proven to work for many years in homes, offices, hospitals, food service companies and other businesses.

There are a variety of configurations, such as a powerful bulb that is exposed to air for short, strong bursts of radiation. This type of UV light installation will kill germs more rapidly, however it costs more than the other type of installation. A low-intensity option allows for the UV light systems to spend more time with a slower radiation of the air, also referred to as “residence time”, which is the “T” in the abbreviation “CT”. When a balance is achieved between the residence time and intensity of the UV bulb, the better the overall results.

  • UV lights need to be replaced annually and they are expensive
  • Air quality can be improved with a filter system, such as an electrostatic filter, to better control pet dander and dust.
  • These systems are helpful in certain areas, however they are not for everyone. Usually the cost is too high for the small benefit that is obtained by using a UV light system.
  • The systems are often not nearly as effective or crucial as they are marketed to be in general use.
