The National Aeronautics and Space Administration completed a study into which house plants are best at eliminating toxins and improving indoor air quality. The study was an attempt to keep the air in space stations pure and breathable for long periods of time. After all, they couldn’t just open the window (vacuum=bad)! The EPA lists three basic strategies to improve indoor air quality.
1. Indoor air quality source control
This one is simple: Prevent the toxin from being introduced to clean air in the first place.
2. Improved ventilation
Improved ventilation will move toxin-filled air out of living spaces and bring in higher quality, fresher outdoor air. Products such as the Trane FreshEffects™ work to bring clean air indoors, removing lingering, unpleasant odors and improving the air quality in you home.
3. Air cleaners
Certain plants and equipment can essentially scrub the toxins out of the air. Household plants can actually perform similar functions to some of the popular products Boer Brothers offers, like the Trane CleanEffects™ or Aprilaire filter media. You can learn more about our comprehensive air quality product offerings here.
Houseplants can be very effective indoor air cleaners, but some are especially good at targeting specific toxic chemicals. NASA’s indoor air quality study found that numerous houseplants are effective at removing chemicals like ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene, all chemicals with severe heath impacts. Common air-filtering houseplants include the Boston Fern, English Ivy, Florist’s Chrysanthemum, Chinese Evergreen and Weeping Fig.
For sheer hardiness and longevity, you can’t beat the Snake Plant, otherwise known as the Mother-in-Law’s Tongue. In fact, our own Bryan Boer has kept one in his office for several years with little care needed, and it’s still as alive and robust as ever. The Snake Plant does a great job filtering out the chemical-like smell coming from the rubber mats in the workout space adjacent to our office.
